How to Handle Clay Earrings in Cold Weather

Winter sucks. Snow is inconvenient, the sun sets so early that it feels like it never even came up, and having to spend five-plus minutes bundling up every time you open your door is a frustrating endeavor. If you’re an owner of polymer clay earrings, the cold weather can add an extra challenge.

Heat expands, cold contracts. It’s science! Polymer clay earrings are made up of atoms, just like everything else, so they’re not immune to the perils of the cold. So as an owner of these fine pieces of artwork, you have to be extra careful with them when it comes to freezing temperatures.

But how? Don’t worry, the experts got you.

During the summer or inside a warm house, you may have noticed that your polymer clay earrings can slightly bend or flex without any issue. This is totally normal. But when polymer clay gets cold, it becomes less flexible and more delicate. This is also totally normal but more problematic.

If your earrings are more delicate, then they’re easier to break, and we don’t want that. If you were to accidentally bend or apply too much pressure to polymer clay earrings while they’re exposed to colder temperatures, you run a higher risk of snapping or otherwise damaging them.

This doesn’t make it certain or even likely, but it is something to keep in mind and be cautious about. To mitigate your chances of breaks and snaps in the winter time, put your earrings on only after you arrive at wherever you’re going. Store them in an empty pocket of your purse, in a small baggie, or something similar in the meantime. Then, once you’re inside or at your destination, put them in your ears and enjoy!

What Temperature Should Polymer Clay Earrings Be Stored In?

Not cold, but that doesn’t mean you need it to be hot, either. Room temperature is fine, and even a bit below is probably okay.

So, Should I Never Wear My Clay Earrings in the Cold?

No, that’s not entirely necessary. If it’s truly, sincerely, and incredibly cold (like below 0 degree Fahrenheit or something of that nature), then you might want to leave them at home or keep them stored in safe keeping until you arrive at your destination, but you don’t have to keep them locked away whenever a cool breeze comes along. Don’t be alarmed that your earrings will snap at the hint of cold.

But do know that they’re more vulnerable in the cold and that it is wise to take precautions and be aware so you can maintain them for years to come. If you’re uncertain, you can leave them home or keep them tucked away until you’re someplace warm, but rest assured that there is no Cold Monster out there attacking innocent polymer clay earrings. Just be careful and smart, and things should work out okay!
