Are Polymer Clay Earrings Heavy?

Earrings are great accessories for most outfits, but the nuisance of gravity constantly aggravating your ears is annoying. If earrings could be light enough that gravity’s pull wouldn’t tug our earlobes to the earth, then there would be no downside to the fashion statement. Can polymer clay save us from saggy ear syndrome? Are polymer clay earrings heavy?

Are Polymer Clay Earrings Heavy?

To put it simply - no, polymer clay earrings are absolutely not heavy.

A big draw of polymer clay earrings is that they are notoriously lightweight. The heaviest pair I’ve ever made collectively weighed less than a quarter, and a quarter weighs fewer than 6 grams. So, that’s not even 3 grams of weight on each ear, and it doesn’t get any heavier than that. At least, not with the polymer clay earrings I make.

What Are the Benefits of Lightweight Earrings and Jewelry?

First and most obviously, comfortability. It simply is not nice to have something pulling your ears down all day long. It’s distracting and off-putting. To not even notice the earrings you have on is a completely different experience.

Second, accessibility. Heavy earrings are frustrating for adults but untenable for some kids. But lightweight earrings and jewelry are much less of a burden on children, so this can be the ideal direction to head for the little ones.

Third, years of heavy earrings will make your ears sag. Eventually, gravity will win. A culmination of hours and hours spent with your ears being dragged down will have a noticeable effect. But if you instead wear lightweight earrings that aren’t heavy as boulders, you can escape that fate.

Could Polymer Clay Earrings Ever Be Heavy?

In theory, yes, polymer clay earrings could be heavy. But that’s only if you add other materials into the designs. For example, if you incorporate stones into a pair of polymer clay earrings, then they’re going to be heavier.

Still, though, they probably won’t be heavier than their full-metal counterparts. Most polymer clay earrings aren’t made with stones anyway, and if you want to ensure your clay earrings will be lightweight, simply avoid any pairs that include other materials beyond the ball posts or fish hooks.

If you’re over heavy earrings and ready for lightweight jewelry that won’t lose to gravity, then polymer clay earrings are for you. And if that’s the case, then you’re lucky enough to be in the right place!
